Racism

Equalities IconWhat is “Racism”? Racism is the prejudice or discrimination based on an individual's race. Racism is about people's racist beliefs against each other, it can be about generally hating someone or thinking someone is less of a person than yourself because of language or skin colour etc. Racism can play a big factor in people’s lives, it had been the cause of wars, slavery and the legal system. People who have racism directed at them can become lonely, angry, isolated and depressed. They might not feel like going to school or work and may lose all of their self-confidence. Racial crimes are against the law, these could be things from violence to harassament but you can also be arrested for ‘inciting racial hatred’. Is to try to get others to join you in being racist.
Race Relations Act 1976 makes it unlawful to discriminate against a person, directly or indirectly on racial grounds in: employment; education; housing; and in the provision of goods, facilities and services. The Race Relations Amendment Act 2000 extends the requirements under the 1976 Act to all functions. The new Act gives public authorities a new statutory duty to promote race equality. The aim is to help public authorities to provide fair and accessible services, and to improve equal opportunities in employment.
Items that are covered include discrimination on the grounds of race, colour, nationality, ethnic and national origin in the fields of employment, the provision of goods and services, education and public functions.
