A scheme offering discounted bus tickets to young people aged 16 - 19 has proved so popular that Stagecoach has agreed to extend it until further notice. Niterider enables young people to travel anywhere in Torbay for £1 after 6pm until 10.30pm on any day of the week.

Torbay Council has received confirmation of the £4,875,000 grant from the Myplace BIG Lottery Fund on behalf of the Department of Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).

The centre run by Torbay Youth Service will offer structured after school sessions for 11-19 year olds, 5 days a week with drop in sessions on Saturdays. Some of the existing Youth Service groups will meet at the centre in the evenings and staff will be available during the day to give information and advice.

Pioneering young people from Torbay have been rewarded for their outstanding volunteering contributions at a special graduation ceremony at Grand Connought Rooms in London.

Voting took place in 17 ballot stations in ten schools across the Bay from 20 January until midnight on 26 January, giving young people the best opportunity to vote for their preferred UK Youth Parliament candidate for the coming year. Latest figures show that almost 2000 votes have been cast, the ballott boxes are now closed.

Around 120 Torbay pupils will receive a free computer and home connection to help them with their school work. Torbay Council has successfully bid for £104,000 from the British Education Communication and Technology Agency (BECTA) which supports the Department for Children, Schools and Families to improve IT opportunities for children and young people.

Torbay Council has teamed up with music, films and games giant hmv, which has just opened a temporary 'pop-up' shop in Torquay 's Union Street for Christmas, to run a competition for secondary school pupils who have an excellent attendance record between now and January in order to qualify for a free prize draw to win an hmv voucher or goody bag.

Planning Permission has now been granted for MyPlace youth centre on the site of Parkfield House in Paignton. Work is due to start on site at the end of May 2010, to be completed by the end of August 2011.

Torbay Council’s Youth Service and Groundwork South West have teamed up to provide a timetable of activities for young people aged 11-19 year old in Torbay. The free activities will take place at various times from 6pm at outdoor play areas at Barton, Roselands, Goodrington, Watcombe, The Willows, Ellacombe, Furzeham and Victoria Park. Mobile artificial lighting will be used to enable young people to take advantage of the multi use games areas on winter nights. Qualified coaches and equipment is provided to enable young people to decide what activities they want to do. Activities are open to everyone, regardless of ability; and for those who wish to improve their skills, there will be opportunities to take accreditation for certain sports

Young people aged 16 -19  will be able to buy a bus ticket for a flat rate of £1 which entitles them to unlimited travel throughout Torbay from 6pm until 10.30pm daily - visit the Niterider page for more information.

Paignton Community and Sports College, in a partnership bid with Torbay Council, has been successful in securing £375,000 from Sport England towards the cost of building a multi-sports complex on the school site.

A Torbay student has helped Torbay Council promote its harbours and facilities by using his film making talents to produce a promotional DVD, which will be shown the British Ports Association Conference, taking place in Scarborough this week, to help encourage delegates to come to the next conference which will be held in Torquay in 2010.

Torbay Council is pleased to receive the Department for Children, Schools and Families funding which will enable young people aged between 5 and 16 who are economically disadvantaged to access out of school activities for free.
